Seborrheic Dermatitis

Also referred to Dandruff in adults but in infants it is known as “cradle cap.” This condition usually occurs during the first few months of life. Sebaceous glands on the infant’s scalp begin producing too much oil with thick, greasy, yellowish scales. Cradle cap can spread to the infant’s face and eyelids, as well as behind the ears. In most cases, cradle cap improves without treatment around 8 to 12 months of age. The exact cause of seborrheic dermatitis is unknown, however treatment is very easy and efficient. The scales characteristic of cradle cap can be removed by applying an oil such as olive oil or baby oil or almond oil to the scalp before the infant goes to bed. The oil should be left on the scalp overnight to soften the scales, which can then be removed with a comb. The area should then be washed with a mild baby shampoo. Through PFR compounding , we can offer you other options to treat cradle cap.
